When navigation was still a CD in the glovebox
Maps were made by driving the roads. One-way streets, turn restrictions, house numbers – all recorded one by one, nothing to look up.
A wrong one-way street really did send someone the wrong way.

Then someone asked about branches
The request came from outside. What was available were datasets of unclear origin – addresses that gave no hint of which year they came from.
The same task as before. Only it was no longer about the roads, but about what stands on them.

Why that makes the difference
Copying would be easy. You cannot tell how old an address is by looking at it – and an error becomes more credible with every copy.
Anyone who collected maps when there was nothing to copy knows the difference.
